Companion

Companion

Companion is a movie that’s scary because it can happen. Humanity using women robots for sex then modding them to be murderers? Totally believable.

At the beginning of the movie, Iris meets Josh at a grocery store and they fall in love. Fast forward some unknown amount of time and they’re traveling to a friend’s place for a vacation. Iris remarks that the friend doesn’t like her, and the friend says that she doesn’t like her kind several times. It’s the first time we’re given a hint that something is off with Iris. She seems sweet and in love, but her mannerism is off. We quickly learn that she’s an AI robot built for companionship for men.

After being assaulted by the friend’s boyfriend, Iris kills him, which should be impossible for her programming. Josh gives the typical villain spiel before she plans to turn her offline, telling her she’s a robot that he paid to have sex with. Unfortunately for him and all his friends, she steals her controls and runs off before he can deactivate her.

Companion was a fun movie to watch with plenty of gore and plenty of laughs. It kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time, wondering what would happen next. The main actress, Sophie Thatcher, did an incredible job at giving us hints to her true AI identity from the beginning, and did a scary good job at playing a robot.
